Gestation period...

Tue Aug 19, 2008, 5:39 PM
No, I'm not pregnant. Got spayed a couple of decades ago. However, the brain never stops producing offspring, if you're lucky. I'm going through some philosophical and lifestyle changes...as well as being busy playing a guitar every spare moment.

Anyway, lots of changing going on.. Frank and I are planning the sale of our house and a chunk of our stock assets to purchase a farm in this area. The land will be expensive, but we think we can make a profitable go of it. We're spending a lot of time developing a plan of attack (also known as a 'business plan';) and studying up on important agricultural stuff we need to know. We're also stepping up and learning to do our own home repairs and modifications.. which is sometimes more expensive than hiring a professional, I've noticed. ;) I have an incredibly productive 10x10' garden right now, but this fall we're going to prepare several large raised garden beds. The little plot we have now has really effectively reduced our grocery bill, so I'm excited to see if we'll be able to mostly eliminate it, next year. I get two gallons of raw milk a week from a local farm, as well as honey and chicken meat and a whole pig, later this year. With the milk, I make butter and cheese and sour cream and buttermilk and yogurt, so I've stopped buying all those things at the grocery store... that's gone a long way towards reducing our grocery bill, as well.

So, yeah.. lots of changing going on. I quit smoking almost a year ago, now, and health is oozing out my pores, what with all the good food and exercise I've been getting. I've noticed the urge to create visual beauty has been hitting strongly, lately, and I seem to get inspired most easily these days. Something artistic is going to happen soon. I can feel it coming.

 good luck with your farm :manhug: but won't the feed bills for any animals be as high as your current grocery bills are now?

my folks traded grazing for a share of the meat at the end of each season  that and my Dad's green thumb really did help as they retired and lived into their mid 90s

More than likely, we'll find someone like your folks willing to trade managed grazing for a share of meat... not a bad deal, considering meat is so expensive and managed grazing really increases soil fertility. There are plenty of folks in this area with pastures laying fallow.. and we only need an acre or so to plant all of our own food, and everything else we plant can go to fuel the CSA operation. (CSA = Community Supported Agriculture, i.e. a farm that people subscribe to for a share of the food produced.)

I've got the green thumb in this family. Hopefully, with planning and proper application of labor, we'll be as lucky as your parents. So far, the experiments we're conducting on our little sub-urban lot are bearing good fruit. We're building a little vegetative ecosystem here, for the next five years or so.

Thank you for the good wishes. :)

my folks retired to four acres in West Virginia for the trade of pasture rights for a share of the meat that grazed there, although his green thumb kept us in fresh veggies all summer on the southern shore of Long Island, NY too

may i ask what area of the :flagus: you're in?

The Pacific Northwest.. Washington state. Fertile and temperate, coastal area. I love it here better than any other area of this country that I've lived in, thus far. South, southwest, southeast, eastern seaboard.. This place seems best.
